Some patterns just deserve a second look.
The Patchwork Clamshell Zipper Pouch has always been one of my favourites. It combines two things I absolutely love – modern patchwork and bag making – to create a pouch that’s pretty enough to show off and practical enough to actually use.

But after a few years of making, teaching and designing, I started looking at this pattern and thinking… I know I can make this even better.
So, I pulled her back out of the archives, gave the whole pattern a good refresh and, because apparently I can’t leave well enough alone, added a brand new small size too.
The result? A pattern that’s clearer, easier to follow and packed with more of the little sewing tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way.
And yes… she’s had a glow-up.

What’s New?
This isn’t just a quick refresh. I’ve gone through the pattern from beginning to end, making it clearer, easier to follow and packed with more of the little tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way.
Here’s what’s new:
- A brand new small pouch size has been added. And yes, it’s perfect for those 2″ clamshells I love so much.
- Clearer, step-by-step instructions.
- More colour photos throughout the pattern – like one at every single step.
- Brand new printable 2″ and 3″ clamshell templates.
- Extra sewing tips to help you achieve professional-looking results.
- A new customisation section telling you how to use your own patchwork designs, not just clamshells.
- Refined construction methods that make the pouch even more enjoyable to sew.
Whether this is your first time making the pouch or you’re coming back to an old favourite, I think you’ll notice the difference.

More Than Just a Pretty Pouch
One of my favourite things about this pattern is how versatile it is.
The contrasting base beautifully frames your patchwork, making it the perfect project for showing off favourite fabrics, treasured scraps or a hand-stitched EPP panel you’ve been wondering what to do with.

Because sometimes you just want to play with patchwork without committing to an entire quilt. A little patchwork panel, a handful of favourite fabrics and suddenly you’ve made yourself a very cute pouch.
And while I still absolutely love the generous size of the Large, there’s just something about the new Small size. It’s quick, cute and the perfect excuse to make another one. And another one.

Both sizes are practical too, making them perfect for storing sewing supplies, toiletries, stationery, makeup, travel essentials or whatever little treasures need a home.
New to EPP Clamshells?
If you’ve never sewn clamshells before, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered.
Alongside the pattern, I’ve completely revamped my FREE EPP Clamshell Tutorial here on the blog.
It walks you through everything from tracing and glue basting your clamshells to joining rows, appliquéing them to a foundation fabric and removing the papers. I’ve even added tips for taking your clamshells on the go, because that’s one of the best things about EPP!
So if clamshells have always looked a little intimidating, this is a great place to start.
